President Biden, I’m Not a Member of the Élite. But I, Too, Think It’s Time for You to Step Aside

Dear President Biden:

I voted for you in the 2020 presidential election. I voted for you in the 2024 California primary just a few months back. And, if you remain the democratic candidate in the 2024 presidential election, I will vote for you again. I would, as the saying goes, vote for an old yellow dog before I’d vote for the other candidate. But I wish this were not the choice ordinary Americans like me will face in November.

To be clear, I am not a media or political élite. I’m not a “big name.” I have nothing to gain in terms of viewers or public attention by fanning the flames of anxiety among the democratic base. I am a member of that base — a loyal one, who has supported democratic candidates and volunteered for their campaigns since my early teens — and I am anxious about your viability as a candidate who can successfully challenge the menace to democracy that is Donald Trump. No flame fanning required.

Now, I have heard you and members of your campaign, including my own governor, Gavin Newsom, argue that your harrowing performance in the June 27 debate was the result of fatigue from international travel and the effects of a cold.
